أيرلندا

أيرلندا is an island country in Northwestern Europe that occupies most of the island of أيرلندا. Along with Malta, it is one of the only English-speaking countries in the European Union and uses the euro as its currency. Yes, that’s correct—أيرلندا is part of the EU, despite many people confusing it with Northern Ireland, which is part of the المملكة المتحدة.

اقتصاد

The country is known for its modern economy, focused on services and advanced technologies, as well as for its high standard of living and quality education.

المؤسسات التعليمية

Like the المملكة المتحدة, أيرلندا is home to a number of educational institutions with a rich tradition and history. Dublin is the capital and the largest city in Ireland, home to the prestigious Trinity College Dublin, which is one of the oldest and highest-ranked universities in the world. Its direct competitor is University College Dublin. In the capital, Dublin, are also located several other prestigious universities such as Dublin Institute of Technology, كلية دبلن للأعمال, and Dublin City University. Cork is the second-largest city in أيرلندا and the center of University College Cork, which offers strong programs in science, arts, and business. Limerick is the third-largest city and home to the University of Limerick, known for its modern infrastructure and a focus on entrepreneurship, innovation, and sports. University of Galway is another prestigious university in أيرلندا, renowned for its excellent department of Theatre and Performing Arts, ranking in the top 100 globally for performing arts. The NCAD (National College of Art and Design) is Ireland’s leading art and design school, where the most creative students study.

APPLICATION PROCESS & REQUIREMENTS

Applying in Ireland is very different from applying in the المملكة المتحدة and other English-speaking countries. Based on the average performance of applicants, a score (called the points system) is determined, which usually goes up to 600 points but can exceed 600 for specialties like Design (with bonus points from a portfolio) and Medicine (with bonus points from the HPAT entrance exam), interviews, and others. In the Bulgarian education system, students NEVER receive the maximum points because a top grade of 6.00 in the secondary school diploma translates to only about 500 points in the Irish system. This is because Irish authorities consider the Bulgarian system not sufficiently competitive compared to the UK, Irish, IB, or other international evaluation systems. Students can increase their points by another 25 if they come from a “Mathematics” profile, regardless of whether this subject is relevant to their chosen specialty. An extremely striking case is the conversion of Bulgarian professional diplomas, where a top grade of 6.00 only earns 390 points out of 600, which significantly reduces chances of acceptance into the most prestigious universities and programs. On the other hand, IB diplomas with scores between 42 and 45 points are recognized with the maximum 600 points, which is a major advantage for applicants. American diplomas are reviewed individually by each Irish institution, and in most cases, additional SAT and AP exams are required for admission. In أيرلندا, applications are due by February 1st, and you can list up to 10 preferred choices in the CAO portal, ranked by priority. Unfortunately, this is one of the few countries where applications are also sent by mail, in addition to online submissions. To applicants’ great surprise, the results are only released at the end of August or the beginning of September.

TUITION FEES

The average tuition fees at Irish public universities range between 3,000 and 7,000 euros, but EU students may be exempt from these fees under certain conditions.

ACCOMMODATION & HOUSING

The average cost of student accommodation in أيرلندا can vary depending on the city and region. In major cities like Dublin, Cork, and Galway, prices for student apartments usually range between 300 and 600 euros per month for shared rooms. In smaller towns and cities, the costs are generally lower, typically between 200 and 400 euros for shared rooms. Dormitories tend to be slightly more expensive — the average monthly price for a student dorm in Dublin is around 600 to 1,200 euros. Prices are usually lower in Limerick, Cork, and Wexford, ranging between 300 and 600 euros per month for student dormitories.

Obtaining a Personal Public Service Number (PPSN) To stay legally in أيرلندا and work there, you need to obtain your PPSN number. The process begins with registration on the Irish Revenue online platform or visiting a local Dublin Revenue Office. To get your PPSN, you will need to provide your passport, proof of university registration, and an address proof (such as a housing contract). After registration, the process usually takes a few working days, and you will receive a personal number that is mandatory for employment, social services, and tax procedures. Health Insurance and Social Services Health insurance is mandatory for all international students in أيرلندا. If you are an EU citizen, you can use your European Health Insurance Card, which provides free or low-cost access to medical services. After registering with the local municipality and obtaining your PPSN, you should also register with the local health authority (Health Service Executive – HSE) to arrange health insurance that covers your basic healthcare needs. This registration can also be done online, which simplifies the entire process and ensures you will be covered during your stay in أيرلندا.

WORK DURING STUDIES IN IRELAND

European students can work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during holidays and festive periods. No special work permit is required. The pay usually ranges between €8 and €12 per hour, depending on the type of work and region. Common positions include working as waiters, bartenders, retail workers, hotel staff, or administrative positions within the university. For non-EU students, a work authorization document issued by Irish authorities is required, allowing them to work up to 20 hours per week.

SCHOLARSHIPS, GRANTS AND STUDENT LOANS

The SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland) system is the main scholarship and financial support program in Ireland, designed to help students cover tuition fees and living expenses during their studies in the country. Although primarily aimed at Irish citizens, SUSI provides certain aid to EU nationals as well. It covers up to 100% of tuition fees and can also provide monthly grants to cover accommodation, food, transportation, and other personal needs if specific criteria are met. To apply, candidates must meet residence requirements:
  • having lived at least 3 years out of the last 5 in Ireland or the EU;
  • be enrolled in an accredited college or university;
  • not be receiving other full scholarships or grants;
  • and meet certain income thresholds.Required documents include a valid passport or ID card, proof of residence (permit or visa), proof of enrollment at the educational institution, income documentation (pay slips, P60, social security), and evidence of family structure if applicable.
An essential requirement is that applicants must already have a PPSN number; without it, they cannot submit a SUSI application. The application process involves creating a profile on the SUSI online portal, filling out the personal information form, verifying income details, uploading all necessary documents, and submitting the application before the deadline. Afterward, applicants should monitor their profile messages for status updates and any additional requirements. Decisions are made based on eligibility and available funding, with approval notifications typically arriving a few weeks after the deadline.
